A patient-friendly guide to what a good tattoo removal consult should cover before treatment begins.

What a consult should answer
A strong consult should help you understand whether full removal, partial fading, or lightening for a cover-up is the right goal. It should also explain the biggest drivers of complexity in plain language.
What your clinician may review
Your clinician may review tattoo size, color mix, age, body location, whether the tattoo is a cover-up, and whether there is visible scarring or raised texture. They may also review skin tone considerations and prior treatment history if relevant.
Questions worth asking
Ask how the clinic thinks about likely session range, what could change that range, what recovery may look like, and whether teleconsult follow-up is available between visits.
What a good consult does not do
A responsible consult does not promise an exact number of sessions or a guaranteed final appearance. It should frame uncertainty honestly while still giving you a usable next step.
